County offers housing help on several levels



Expanded support for evaluating construction proposals

Permit Sonoma will now be offering bid proposal reviews to assist fire survivors in reviewing construction bids from potential contractors. These reviews will be offered at no cost to fire survivors to help them determine whether the scope and pricing of construction bids are appropriate for their rebuilding projects. Boosting ADU construction

In February, Permit Sonoma began offering dedicated staff and customer service hours to help customers navigate the process of permitting an accessory dwelling unit (ADU). Appointments with a planner are available Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to noon, for homeowners to ask questions and get more information, or, if ready to apply, and for staff to review and accept complete ADU applications.

An ADU is a small permanent home that may be established in addition to the main dwelling on a parcel zoned for residential or agricultural use. ADUs may be attached or detached from the main dwelling, may involve new construction, conversion of an existing structure, or designation of an existing home as an accessory dwelling unit so that a new main residence can be built.

Deadline extended for nominating housing sites

Since December 2018, Sonoma County planning officials have been seeking public input to identify sites appropriate for higher density, affordable, or workforce housing within the unincorporated areas of the county.

As of March 12, Permit Sonoma received 81 submissions for parcels to evaluate for rezoning. Of those, 45 appear to meet initial eligibility requirements. The department will continue accepting site nominations through the end of March. Planning staff will initially review sites within two weeks of submission to determine whether they meet the required criteria for rezoning, followed by environmental review of qualifying sites. The public will be invited to comment on these sites at upcoming public hearings before the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors. Permit Sonoma staff hope to present the list of sites for proposed rezoning to the Board of Supervisors in Fall 2019.
