Kenwood School news
By Bob Bales, Superintendent/Principal
In this day and age where it sometimes seems that our children are getting less and less from our public institutions, Kenwood School is offering more, in terms of additional academic enrichment for our students. Continuing with a tradition of offering after school programs to interested students, this fall Kenwood students in grades 1-6 may select from among four “after school” courses. Nearly 30% of the students in the school are involved in taking an enrichment course. The offerings include beginning Spanish, which is taught twice per week with Senora Dixon, Chess for Kids which is taught by Mr. Holwell (a retired teacher), Art with school district art specialist, Joni Cresci, and Yoga with specialist Lisa Murray. Due to the budget cutbacks that affect all public schools, families are being asked to pay a fee of $8 per class this year. Scholarships are, of course, available for families who need financial assistance.
It is the goal of the school to continue to offer a variety of after school courses covering diverse academic subjects throughout the school year. Most courses meet once a week for a six to eight week period.
All members of the community are welcome to attend the monthly meeting of the School Site Council, which coordinates the after school enrichment programs. The Site Council is a group of parents and staff members who meet one time per month to assist in the development of the school’s academic instructional program. This year’s School Site Council consists of the following parents: Judy Sweeney (Chairperson), Robin Kallman (Vice Chairperson), Sherry Hartman, Tom Anderson, and Robin Lane. Staff members include: Bob Bales (Superintendent/Principal), Karla Schloemp (Kindergarten), Carol Cagle (third grade), Susan Raymond (resource teacher), and Julie Cannard (classroom assistant).
The Site Council will meet next at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the school’s computer lab. For additional information regarding the School Site Council or any other program at Kenwood School, please feel free to contact Suzanne Ciernick (the District Secretary) at 833-2500.
