Wine Country Girl Ė Spilling the good stuff...
Wine meets grill
Itís the season for outdoor entertaining, sipping wine on the patio and backyard barbecuing. One of my favorite warm weather activities is pairing wine with food, and every season opens the gateway to new culinary experiences.
There are so many fabulous local wines available here in our neck of the woods. I always like to try new wines, but I also have a few loyal favorites. Either way, itís always enjoyable! I have been spending almost every evening outside recently and have been sipping some local wines with grilled fare that are definitely worth sharing.
Letís get to the good stuff.
Enkidu Wineryís newest release, 2011 Shamhat Syrah Ros from the Russian River Valley is a refreshing addition to life in the great outdoors. This wine has beautiful depth and complexity with delicate layers of tart fruit, creamy mouth feel, and a soft dry finish. I paired it with fresh strawberries from the local strawberry stand dipped in crme fraiche. It would also pair very well with a cheese platter and fresh fruit or a tossed baby green salad with nicoise olives.
Another Enkidu favorite of mine is the 2009 Kick Ranch Sauvignon Blanc. This lovely Sauvignon Blanc is barrel fermented, which lends more texture and complexity, rather than stainless steel fermenting. Lovely essence of orange blossom and citrus are present on the nose with concentrated tart fruit on the palate. The mouth feel is silky and crisp. This refreshing Sauv Blanc has a very creamy finish with notes of peach and minerals. I paired it with a spinach salad with grilled pears and crumbled blue cheese with a lemon tarragon dressing.
Letís welcome our new neighbors, B Wise Vineyards, who recently opened a tasting room in Kenwood. I had the pleasure of trying a few of their wines and definitely incorporated them into my patio dining adventures.
B Wise 2009 Wisdom is a medium-bodied red blend that is great for everyday sipping. Fruitful aromas of tart strawberry and blueberry on the nose lead to ripe plum and fig flavors on the palate. This wine has immense layers of cocoa and black tea on the finish with soft notes of mineral and earth. It pairs well with just about any grilled meats, grilled vegetables or even grilled pizza.
B Wise 2007 Trios is a darker, more full-bodied red blend, boasting aromas of rich black cherry and flavors of dark chocolate and cinnamon. The mouth feel is creamy and rich with a beautiful balance of tannins, earth and spiced oak. I paired this amazing red wine with a blue cheese crusted grilled flank steak, topped with grilled balsamic onion relish, grilled artichokes and grilled Cremini mushrooms.
B Wise 2008 Sonoma Valley Syrah has seductive dark fruit aromas on the nose with ripe blackberry, dried black cherry and earthy smoky flavors in the mouth. The finish is long and complex with luscious layers of toasted oak and spice. I paired this wine with a black pepper crusted grilled pork tenderloin and fig compote.
Both Enkidu and B Wise tasting rooms are located right in Kenwood. Stop in and say hello and tell them Sunshine sent you.
