Wine Country Girl – Spilling the good stuff...
Spilling the good stuff
Wiser by the glass
Since the opening of their new tasting room in Kenwood, B Wise has been making quite a name for themselves. The small lot, limited wines that are produced on their 20-acre vineyard near Moon Mountain are beyond exceptional and have wowed the palates of wine enthusiasts, including myself.
But they also offer a different kind of wine tasting experience that is unique, intimate, warm and comfortable. If you're looking for an amazing wine experience, they host private tastings in the reserve room and also private tours and tastings in the caves on their vineyard property.
I have had the pleasure of getting familiar with the wines and if you haven't tried them yet, you should! So, let's get to the good stuff.
B Wise has created a unique Rosé of Syrah. They currently have two vintages and they are each different and beautiful in their own ways. If you have shied away from rosés, these will be sure to convert you into a fan! Both would make a great accompaniment to your Thanksgiving holiday meal.
2010 Rosé of Syrah has a deep ruby color because the winemaker, Mossimo Monticelli, let the skins soak in the juice far longer than a traditional rosé. This wine has beautiful strawberry notes on the nose with ripe strawberry, cream and watermelon flavors on the palate. It has more substance and depth than your typical rosé and a meaty texture. The finish is savory and elegant. This is a fabulous pair to any grilled meats or as an apéritif.
2011 Rosé of Syrah is much lighter in color, having soaked in the skins for less time, but still darker than a typical rosé. Bright fruity nuances greet the nose with tart raspberry, leading to strawberry and rhubarb flavors on the mouth. It has a crisp, light and dry finish. This wine begs for fresh goat cheese and fruit.
2007 Trios is a red blend, primarily of Cabernet, Syrah and Merlot. Each of the varietals lend their own qualities to this unique blend. Tart fruit on the nose with ripe blackberry, pomegranate and cherry flavors on the palate. Hints of black tea linger on the finish with nice tannins and minerality. This is a great match to rich pasta sauces, mushrooms and olives.
Newly released, 2010 Wisdom is a Cabernet-Zinfandel blend, which has been so popular they sold out of the 2009 vintage faster than anticipated. So far, the 2010 is carrying the torch beautifully. Dark, ripe berries hit the nose, leading to rich fruit, vanilla cocoa essences in the mouth with a wallop of spice at the end. The finish is very soft. Grilled flank steak with melted gorgonzola and caramelized onions made a perfect marriage with the Wisdom at the Sunshine Lodge last week!
2008 Monte Rosso Cabernet is hands down one of the most beautiful Cabs I have ever feasted my taste buds on. Twenty-year-old vines yield the fruit for this luscious Cabernet. Beautiful ripe fruit aromas on the nose lead to rich blackberry, caramel and dark chocolate flavors caressing the palate. The finish is very soft and velvety. I paired it with a roasted pork tenderloin smothered in a Cabernet Rhubarb reduction sauce.
2009 Brion Estate Cabernet is an incredibly big Cab! Black cherry notes are heavy on the nose with a hint of herbaciousness. Cocoa, tobacco and earth are present on the palate. Prominent tannins, spiced oak and minerals linger on the long finish. I paired this with black pepper crusted prime rib roast.
2009 Estate Syrah has super inky purple color with intense dark fruit and smoke on the nose. The flavors are consistent in this Syrah, through the mid palate to the finish. Rich black currant and dried fig fill the mouth, leading to heavy earth and smoke on the finish. I drizzled some of this Syrah over fresh figs and topped them with a creamy French blue cheese, Saint Agur, and melted it slightly. It was a match made in heaven!
B Wise will be hosting a Wisdom Release event at their tasting room in Kenwood on Dec. 2, 2-5 p.m. It will be a great opportunity to try the wines and see what all the buzz is about! The event is open to the public and they even offer a special “locals” discount. Make sure to mention this article.
Hope to see you there!
Until next time, Cheers!
