SDC future is topic of April 16 meeting

Do you have something to say about the future of the Sonoma Developmental Center (SDC)?

Then make sure you attend a public meeting on April 16, 6:30 p.m., at Dunbar School.

The Glen Ellen Forumís SDC/Eldridge Committee has been working in partnership with†the Glen Ellen Historical Society, the Sonoma Land Trust, and the Sonoma Ecology Center, and is holding this public meeting about the future of SDC/Eldridge. Anyone interested is strongly encouraged to attend.

The SDCís remaining patients are scheduled to be moved out by the end of the year, and a future plan for the 900-plus acres of open space, buildings, and other facilities is, at the moment, up in the air. A nationally recognized urban planning and landscape design firm was selected last year to do a site assessment of the Development Centerís 142 buildings and extensive grounds, including figuring out the best future uses for the property. A final report has not yet been completed.

The SDC/Eldridge Committee of the Glen Ellen Forum, in conjunction with other entities, has developed a list of priorities, including preservation of open space, a historic district that would include a museum, library, and memorial park, wildlife corridors, recreational opportunities, and accommodating facilities for educational, business, community, and housing resources at a size and scale consistent with existing land use and that do not result in sprawl or overloaded infrastructure.
