Writing, painting, photo competitions

Get creative and use the legacy of Jack London and his “mate-woman” Charmian London, as your muse to enter these contests – going on now through Sept. 1 – for a chance to win great prizes. Creative writers can submit a short story about the incomparable Charmian London, wife of Jack London, who challenged conventional femininity through her dress, decor, athleticism and private behavior. First place prize is $1,000, second place is $250, and third place is $100. Winners will be recognized and asked to read their stories at the awards festival. Winning stories will be posted on the park website with an interview with the author. Find out more about contest rules at www.jacklondonpark.com/charmian-writers-contest-2018.html.

Painters, ages 18 and older, may create and submit a painting inspired by the environs of Jack London State Historic Park. First, second and third place prizes are the same as above, plus a Jack London Park Pass worth $49 awarded to seven Honorable Mentions. The top ten paintings will be displayed at the awards ceremony and images of artwork will be posted on the website. Find out more at www.jacklondonpark.com/painting-contest-2018.html.

If photography is more your thing, create a photograph that shows how the land at Jack London State Historic Park inspires. First, second and third place prizes are the same as above, with winning entries posted on the website with an interview with the photographer. Entry fees for the contests are $25 per entry for Jack London Park members; $35 nonmembers. Photographers may submit multiple entries, each with a separate entry fee.
