Sonoma Mountain Zen Center
Saturday March 3rd - 9:00amThe Sonoma Mountain Zen Center (SMZC) hosts a workshop for beginners on the basics of zazen, or “just sitting,” meditation on Saturday, March 3, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Includes an introduction to the practice of mindfulness as well as fundamental Buddhist perspective. This workshop will include short periods of sitting meditation, outdoor walking meditation, discussion, instruction on Soto Zen forms and informal presentations relating to Buddhist thought to actualize zen practice into one’s everyday life. The instructor will be Jundo–Mike Farrand, who began formally practicing zen at the SMZC where he has lived since 2005. A vegetarian buffet lunch is included. Cost is $55.
For those more experienced, the SMZC is hosting a spring study group March 6 through April 17 on Tuesday evenings, 7:30-9 p.m., for those interested in investigating and “turning our radiance inward” through zen practice. This is an opportunity to explore the fundamental teachings of Buddhism and the foundation for daily practice. Lectures and discussions will center on the book The Light that Shines Through Infinity: Zen and the Energy of Life by Dainin Katagiri. Cost is $65 for nonmembers, $60 for members, $55 for practicing members.
