Oakmont lawn bowling demonstration day

Monday September 2017 - 10:00am to

Oakmont residents may have seen the green grassy square to the side of the Central Recreation Center and wondered about its use. It is for playing “Bowls,” a game that is over seven centuries old – in 1299 a group of players established the Southhampton Old Bowling Green Club. The Oakmont Lawn Bowling Club was the first club to be established at Oakmont, more than 50 years ago.

Unlike bowling balls and bocce balls, lawn bowlers don’t use a round ball. Rather, the ball, called a bowl, has somewhat of an egg shape, but with a weight on one side. That is the feature that makes it challenging. As the bowl rolls, the weight begins to exert itself causing it to turn toward the side of the weight.

The Oakmont Lawn Bowling Club holds “Demo Days” for Oakmont residents to try out the sport of lawn bowling. The club will be hosting a Demo Day on Monday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to noon. Club members will be there to play a few games for everyone to watch. They will also offer hands-on opportunity to see if you like the game and how well you do. This is a totally free event for those interested in learning the game. If you find that you like the sport, we can arrange follow-up lessons to get you going.
