Palliative and spiritual care in the golden years

Star of the Valley Catholic Church

Thursday September 2017 - 1:30pm to

Come to Star of the Valley Church in Oakmont on Thursday, Sept. 28, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. for a free, lively presentation on “Palliative and Spiritual Care in the Golden Years.” Palliative care is a multidisciplinary approach to specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. It focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, physical stress, and mental stress of a serious illness – whatever the diagnosis. The goal of such therapy is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family. Raymond Dougherty, director of spiritual care at Kaiser Permanente for the Marin-Sonoma service area, and social worker Bill Dorsey will discuss various ways palliative and spiritual care can be approached.

Dougherty earned an M.A. in theology from the University of San Francisco and has more than 14 years experience providing palliative and inpatient chaplaincy services. He completed his clinical pastoral education at St. Mary’s Medical Center in San Francisco and served as a CPE supervisory candidate at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. Dougherty served as a staff chaplain at O’Connor Hospital in San Jose, where he specialized in palliative care in the ICU and ED. He also led the Pastoral Visiting and Spiritual Care Field Education Programs.

Bill Dorsey is a social worker who educates about palliative care.

The presentation at the Monsignor Fahey Parish Center, 495 White Oak Dr. in Oakmont, will last 45 minutes to one hour with the remaining 30 minutes for any questions from the audience, followed by cookies, tea and coffee provided by the Men’s and Women’s Club. There is no cost to attend this presentation but reservations are required. Please call or email Judith Fleshman at 858-663-2880 or judithfleshman@yahoo.com. Deadline for reservations is Monday, Sept. 25. Donations to help cover the cost of this presentation will be accepted at the door.
