Advanced youth backpack program at Sugarloaf

Sugarloaf State Park

Monday June 18th 2018 - to

The Sonoma Ecology Center hosts a series of summer programs for kids. On June 18-21 it will host an advanced backpacking class at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park for middle school and high school students.

The class is geared toward kids ages 12-17 who have some experience in camping and the ability to hike several miles a day up steep inclines. The small group will be guided through a strenuous backpacking trip that will traverse Hood Mountain and Sugarloaf Park over four days. Distances will range from 5-7 miles per day with up to 1,500 feet of elevation gain. The course will push participants to some incredible scenery, gorgeous vistas and the rarely traversed backcountry of the Mayacamas. Food and all backpacking gear are included. Participants will learn advanced “light” and “ultralight” backpacking strategies, simple wilderness first aid, and wilderness ethics, while also being immersed in the ecology of the Mayacamas with interpretation from guides. This camp encourages appreciation for the outdoors, and a better awareness of ourselves and the world around us, as well as providing long lasting memories.

Cost is $430 for Sonoma Ecology Center members, $470 non-members.
