With a song in our hearts

We went to “Broadway Under The Stars” at Jack London State Historic Park last Sunday and were reminded how much this theater group has added to our community. Lots of locals attend the shows, and a number of their theater troupe have put down roots in Sonoma Valley - an incredible asset, and important fundraising vehicle for the park as well.

One highlight that evening was the cast singing “Oklahoma,” but instead it was O-O-O-O-Sonoma. Cute. Along those lines I am offering my limited musical talents, for free, to Transcendence Theater for an evening of songs with a definite local twist.

Sad when your local restaurant is closed for the evening? Sing it Journey-style.

When the lights go down in the Citti,
And the lasagna's off the tray,
I can't wait to get back to my Citti,
Oooo, Oooo, Oooo-a-Ooo.

Or, how about one for a time-honored Oakmont debate, with apologies to Elton John and Kiki Dee:

Don't go raising my dues,
You wouldn't if I cried,
O honey, that's way too much cash,
Baby, let the grass die…

I know it's painful, but one more - channel Johnny Cash for this one, aimed at our tourist friends who think our main thoroughfare is a sidewalk.

I keep a close watch on the highway line,
I keep my eyes wide open all the time,
People stare as if I've lost my mind,
I'm off to dine, and walk with wine.

Stephen, Brad and Amy, I'm waiting by the phone.

The 4th of July in Kenwood promises to be another fabulous day of fun. Everybody, come out for a run/walk, eat some pancakes, cheer the parade, and then have lunch and enjoy the music in Plaza Park. What could be better? July 4 is one of the few days of the year when almost all of us are in the same location at the same time. It's a great opportunity to check in with friends old and new.

A reminder - we do not do a July 15 issue (and haven't for the 20-plus years we've owned the paper) because we really need a vacation! We (sort of) close down for a couple of weeks. The next issue will be Aug. 1.

Don't forget to get your Pictures with the Press photo to us this summer - the deadline is Sept. 5. One rule - the Kenwood Press must be somewhere in the photo. You can be in Timbuktu or in your own backyard; we don't care. Who knows, you might win cash prizes for first or second place, or the coveted hearty handshake for third place. Have fun, and have a safe summer.

- Alec
