Fire district board expansion

As previously announced (Aug. 1 Kenwood Press), the Kenwood Fire Protection District will soon add two more board members to its three-person board, to catch up with the huge responsibilities that have developed for fire departments everywhere over the past decade or two, and especially following last year’s deadly inferno.

The approval process will likely be started sometime later this month when the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) takes on a district reorganization request from another part of the county. The Kenwood request will be a rider to that application.

“It takes a couple of months to work through a reorganization, so the district wouldn’t be adding members until around the end of the year,” said LAFCO Executive Director Mark Bramfitt.

Meanwhile, the board has asked that people living in the district think about serving in the new positions, both of which will be initially appointed, and subject to election for their next terms. You can tell if you live in the district if your property tax bill has a levy from the district on it. You don’t have to be a homeowner to join, but you must live in the district.

Anyone curious about the job should contact Fire Chief Daren Bellach at 833-2042 for more information.
