School spirit with a bigger purpose

On Oct. 16, Dunbar Elementary School students Jose Sanchez-Chairez and Damarius Stancell sported T-shirts from Indiana University Northwest, which their class has “adopted,” as part of the school’s new AVID program. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a national college and career readiness program, focused on connecting real life situations to what students learn in the classroom. As part of the program, every class, K through 5, has adopted a college and every Wednesday students (who are called “scholars”) wear that college’s shirt. Students excelling in the four focuses – writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading – are recognized during a school-wide assembly. Dunbar is the first elementary school in the Sonoma Valley Unified School District to become an AVID school.
