No more involuntary servitude

Dear Editor,

I am not a constitutional attorney, but would love to have one comment on my thought about the U.S. Government shutdown. First, like the 14th Amendment to the constitution, the Fifth Amendment states that no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law. Forcing 800,000-plus people to work without pay is a taking under the law.

It seems that laying off over 800,000 government workers and asking them to work without pay creates an indentured servant issue. The 13th Amendment abolished involuntary servitude except as a punishment for a crime.

The government shutdown was not voluntary and expecting these 800,000-plus workers to work without pay strikes me as slavery! These people have to come up with the money for gas, tolls, or fares to get to work. Many in TSA and Coast Guard must have clean uniforms to wear to work. I find it totally disgusting to force these people to work without pay and wish if I am right that an emergency petition be taken to the U.S. Supreme court to order the shutdown illegal and that the workers and contractors be paid back wages plus interest.
