Village Chat for August 1, 2008
Wasn’t the Kenwood 4th of July Celebration a wonderful day? I’m biased of course, since Alec and I had the great honor of being the grand marshals this year. Thank you, parade organizers! I loved my vantage point from the back of Rick Miron’s 1988 convertible Rolls Royce Corniche. That was my first, and probably last time to ride in a Rolls! The parade was everything you could want in a small-town celebration — a marching band, horses, dogs, chickens, kids, vintage cars, and a few crazy adults (I’m thinking of you, Don MacNair and crew!) Highlights include Nathan Gale playing the National Anthem on his trumpet as the crowd quietly started to sing along; Ross Tucker and Kirsten Bragg riding in a big red Cadillac as the first-ever Kenwood Parade Royalty; boys and girls hopping as fast as they could in the sack race in the park afterward; the very serious faces of the pie contest judges as they set to work. What a great day! And, of course, we owe it all to the hard work of the parade organizers Kjell Kallman, Renate Amantite, Jennifer Stark, Guy Slater, Bob Bellino, Kendra Kolling and Kyle Fisher. These people put in a lot of hours so that we could all have such a good time. You all deserve an award! Thanks also to Trisha and Marcus Ziemer for organizing all the kids’ races, and to Kendra and Paul Kolling and Nana Mae’s Organics for sponsoring the Pie Contest. Parade winners are as follows:
Judges Choice Best of Show — Scooter Knights: Conor and Keaton Burrows, Christopher Kirby, Niko Ivancovich, Jack Duryea, Henry O’Donnell, Zoe Stevens, Christian Bolles.
Fire Engine — Kenwood Fire Department.
Classic Cars, Trucks & Tractors — Paul Simonds and his 1966 Ford Thunderbird.
Livestock & Animals — “Snow White and the Eight Dwarfs” Pat Alexander and her fairytale riders,Hannah Chiapetta, Izzy Ostroff, Luc Ostroff, Samuel Ostroff, Nora Kallman, Chloe Howard, Sarah Reece, Amanda Pearson, Lilly, Audrey and Kathryn Andrews, and Lauren Alexander.
Floats — “Wicked” Allie Ahern and Shannon Stark.
Kids & Their Hobbies — Cassie and Angela Amantite, Rosie Keller and Tyler Lee.
In the First Annual 4th of July Pie Contest, Kathleen Bunte was the unanimous first-place winner for her Peanut Butter Pie with Oreo Crust. Joy Bohlke won second place with her traditional Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, a perennial crowd-pleaser. To see pictures of the Parade, turn to page 17.
Catherine Dixon, daughter of Lynette Meredith, was graduated with honors from UC Santa Cruz on June 15. Her major was European History/International and Global Perspectives. Catherine also received the College Nine Distinction Award, which recognized students who distinguished themselves academically and who have completed requirements in the Language and Culture Pathway. Congratulations, Catherine!
Kathleen Mullins Henderson, daughter of Mike and Liz Mullins, was graduated on June 8 from Empire College School of Law. (I’m sure you know that Mike is also a lawyer, having been our District Attorney for many years.) Kate has been hired as an associate with the firm of Senneff, Freeman and Bluestone in Santa Rosa, where she worked as a law clerk while she was a student. She also participated in the Empire Law Review and Courtroom Mediation. Kate attended Kenwood School and was graduated from Ursuline High School and UC Davis. She and her husband Matt reside in Windsor.
And another Kenwoodian, Sean Bellach was also awarded his JD degree from Empire. Sean is the son of Darryl and Susan Bellach of Kenwood. He received his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder then returned home to the Valley of the Moon and began a career in the wine industry, managing retail operations for Sam Sebastiani and family. For more than five years, Sean was Assemblyman Joe Nation’s Senior Field Representative. Currently he works as a government affairs specialist with Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. While attending law school, Sean served on the Board of Directors for the Cardinal Newman High School Alumni Association, and Tomorrow’s Leaders Today.
Not everyone knows at a young age what they want to be when they grow up, but Kevin Chapin did. Way back in 1991, all the kids in Mrs. Miller’s sixth grade class at Kenwood School were asked what they wanted to be when they grew up. Kevin said, “An architect.” Last month he realized his lifelong dream by successfully completing all the requirements to become a licensed California architect. Kevin graduated three years ago from Montana State University with a Master’s Degree in Architecture, and started working for Quattrocchi Kwok Architects in Santa Rosa. During this time he began taking the nine-part national architect exam. In May he took the California oral exam, which completed this long process. Kevin lives in Santa Rosa with his wife Erica, and is the son of Gary and Gail Chapin of Kenwood. Congratulations, Kevin!
Julian McLain, also a Kenwood School grad, has been named a Richter Scholar at Lake Forest College in Illinois. During the summer between their first and second years in college, outstanding students like Julian are employed for ten weeks as apprentice scholars working one-on-one with faculty members conducting independent research. Julian is working with Biology Professor Shubhik DebBurman on a research project titled “Discovering Molecules that Combat Protein Misfolding Linked Neurodegeneration.” Wow. And just think, all these successful young people came out of Kenwood School!
And speaking of Kenwood School, we are told that newly-hired teacher Amy Einsley will be teaching 5th grade this coming school year. Most of our public schools are starting at the ridiculously early time of mid-August — Maria Carrillo High School starts on August 13. But the Kenwood School has gotten some kind of special dispensation due to their remodeling project, and they do not start until after Labor Day. I wish all schools could start after Labor Day and finish by the end of May, but nobody ever asks me!
Julia Rettig sends news about a couple of young actors who recently appeared in the Missoula Children’s Theater production of Rumpelstiltskin at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa. She writes, “Two soon-to-be first graders at Kenwood School, Devin Rettig of Glen Ellen and Cora Riphenburg of Kenwood auditioned along with 136 local children for 50 parts and were chosen to be bees. They had just one week to rehearse culminating in two shows on Saturday, June 28. Both girls worked very hard and did an excellent job and their families couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Anieta Pock wants to say “Goodbye and Thank You” to the hundreds of customers she has served since she started to work at Nina’s Salon in Oakmont 33 years ago. She worked at Valley Beauty Salon next to Cafe Citti in Kenwood for 23 years and has been working at Shear Elegance in Oakmont since they opened five years ago in December. She’s moving to Nampa, Idaho, to be close to her daughter and grandchildren. “I want to thank all my customers over the years,” she told the Kenwood Press, “and I know everyone will see this in the paper.”
Kenwoodian Terrye Temple and her son, Eric Temple, have both joined Team in Training, a program to help raise funds to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Terrye and Eric will be running/walking in the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco, 13.1 miles in all. This is not an easy walk in the park. Until the big event, Terrye and Eric go to coach-led trainings and follow a schedule that includes training duration and strength and cross training. The two are walking specifically for two of Terrye’s friends who are bravely battling cancer. “Both of these women are our inspirations,” said Terrye, “and we will work, train and fundraise in their honor toward goals that will benefit, we believe, both their lives and ours.” And this is where you come in. Team in Training’s primary mission is to raise money for research to find a cure for blood cancers. Team in Training asks each participant to raise $2,500, so Terrye and Eric have to raise a total of $5,000 by Aug. 26. If you’d like to help them reach their goal, go to their web page. Or you can make out a check to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and mail it to Terrye and Eric at 2666 Lawndale Rd., Kenwood CA, 95452. Good luck, you two, and thanks for working for a cause we can all get behind.
If you’ve been waiting for the movie Bottle Shock to be released, wait no more. The movie, filmed in Sonoma and Napa Valleys (including Kunde Estate Winery and the Jack London Lodge Saloon), is set for a national release starting August 6.
