Village Chat for May 15,2007
Congratulations to Kenwood School’s Sally Doss, who has been named Administrator of the Year in the category of “Confidential Employee” by the Sonoma County Association of School Administrators. Sally has been the school’s secretary since 1990, and she is the heart and soul of Kenwood School. She is that calm, sweet voice on the phone, and that reassuring presence in the school office, no matter what the circumstance. She is the epitome of kindness and compassion. In nominating her for the award, Superintendent/Principal Bob Bales wrote, “Sally is quite simply one of the most efficient, personable and well respected members of a school district that I have ever had the pleasure of working with in my 24 years as a public educator.” Everyone who knows her will agree, whole-heartedly. The awards ceremony took place on May 14 at Paradise Ridge Winery in Santa Rosa.
If you’d like to go to a fantastic party on Memorial Day, and support Dunbar School at the same time, it’s not too late to sign up for a Barbecue and Dance at the Atwood Ranch, 3-7 p.m. on May 28. It’s going to be a festive afternoon with live music by the Solcats and a hearty barbecue prepared by the guys from Sonoma/Glen Ellen Village Markets. Party planners invite you to come prepared to eat, drink, dance if you’re so inclined, or just sit back and relax. Many thanks to Julie and Tom Atwood, who are donating their party venue so that all the proceeds can go to Friends of Dunbar School to help fund enrichment programs and instructional aides for the 2007-2008 school year. Tickets are $50 for adults, and $10 for kids. Call Kate Eagles at 933-0678 or eagles11@mindspring.com, or Marina Zachau at 939-1239 or marinazachau@yahoo.com.
Glen Ellen pianist Stephanie Ozer is about to begin a California tour with vocalist Leny Andrade and the Stephanie Ozer Quintet. Along with Stephanie, the quintet consists of Mary Fettig on flute and saxophone, Randy Vincent on guitar, Scott Thompson, bass, and Phil Thompson, drums. They perform Bossa Nova and Samba-style Jazz. You can catch their first show on June 1st, the opening night of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, at Barndiva Courtyard, 231 Center St. in downtown Healdsburg. Shows are at 7 and 9 p.m., and you can buy tickets online at www.healdsburgjazzfestival.org, or at 707-433-4644. The tour continues with shows in Sunnyvale on June 2, and Los Angeles June 4-6.
It’s getting to be that time of year when students graduate from high schools and colleges. We are always interested in what our young people are up to, so please send us your post-high school or college information. We will publish the high school information in the June 15th issue of the Kenwood Press, and the college information as it comes in.
Mary Ann Marshall recently updated us about her grandson, Zack Marshall, who graduated from Montgomery High School last June. Zack is the son of Steven and Tammi Marshall, and if you’ve ever taken your car to Marshall and Son’s Garage on Griswold Ave. in Kenwood, you won’t be surprised to hear that Zack is studying to be a mechanic, like his dad, Steve, and his granddad, Joe Marshall. Zack is a student at UTI (Universal Technical Institute) in Sacramento, and he also works at Sears in the Automotive Department. You can bet that he’ll be showing Steve and Joe a few new things once he’s out of school!
Dano Vukicevich, a junior at Cardinal Newman High School, is working on a documentary about Wildlife Fawn Rescue as part of his Community Based Service Learning project. So far, he has taken film of the Fawn Rescue facility, conducted interviews, attended an awards ceremony honoring Fawn Rescue Director Marjorie Davis, visited one of their school classroom wildlife programs, and gone out on a call to rescue a fawn whose mother had been killed. Dano will continue working on the documentary into his senior year, and it should end up being a great educational experience both for him and for those who see the final result. We’ll keep you posted.
Bill Creveling reports that the Kenwood based Valley of the Moon Little League Mets upset the undefeated Sonoma Valley Mets in a come-from-behind, 10-9 victory on May 1st at Maxwell Field. Jackson Lasseter drove in the winning run while Prescott Creveling pitched 3 shutout innings. Other major contributors included Kenwood School fourth graders Caleb Horowitz, Cameron Schudy, Sean Murgatroyd, Nathan Ostrander, and Taylor Steele. Way to go, guys!
Renate Amantite writes that for Earth Day the Kenwood school kids decorated about 160 grocery bags from the Kenwood Market with Earth friendly inspirations. Then the Market used the bags on Earth Day and for the rest of this week as well. The idea came from Jeannie Wirka, a Kenwood mom and resident biologist at the Bouverie Preserve.
Desert lovers Mary Boehm and her sister, who lives in Pahrump, Nevada, spent two days in Death Valley in late March. They stayed on the west side of the Valley at Paniment Springs Resort, which Mary said was rustic but comfortable, with an excellent restaurant, bar and lots of roadrunners. The temperature was between 69º and 72º and very windy in the afternoon. They did not see any wildflowers, due to lack of winter rain, but the valley was very pleasant, and starkly beautiful. Mary said that while sitting outside the resort early in the morning a fighter jet zooooomed past, just above ground level. She writes, “If you blinked you would have missed it. Exciting!”
Pam Sloane, of Kenwood and San Francisco, traveled with her daughter, Melissa Hirt, to Spain last November, and recently sent in a picture from the Rock of Gibraltar. Pam has a degree in Spanish literature, but had never been to a Spanish speaking country. When Melissa was able to get a free week’s stay on the Costa del Sol, off they went. They spent a week traveling in Andalucia, and then went to Gibraltar, which is a British overseas territory on the tip of the Iberian Peninsula. A highlight was seeing the Barbary apes, who live on the rock, and proceeded to climb all over their car!
That’s all for now. Don’t forget to send in your graduation news, or any other items you might have for Village Chat. Just email Kenwoodpress@aol.com, or call 833-5155 and chat me up! – A.Q.
