Village Chat: 06/01/2007
Village Chat for June 1, 2007

Chuck Matthewson of Kenwood has a great job. He works for Phil Reilly & Co. in Marin County, doing restoration and maintenance on classic race cars, generally historic Grand Prix and old Formula One race cars from the mid-sixties and earlier. In April Chuck was the mechanic on a 1978 Wolf Formula One that was in a circuit race through downtown Las Vegas for about 25 historic Formula One cars. The driver was Arie Luyendyk, a Dutch racecar driver and two-time Indy winner who had his heyday back in the ‘80s. They were pleased to have a driver of his caliber driving the car, and Luyendyk enjoyed the chance to get back in the seat. The cars made a circuit around the old part of the Las Vegas strip. Another driver you may remember, Bobby Rahal, won the race. Chuck said that these Formula One cars are essentially airplanes on the ground. They have 900 horsepower engines, and are designed in such a way as to pull them closer to the ground, rather than to lift off, as an airplane design does. The open wheels stick out from the sides with no fenders, and “wings” create more down force than the car weighs. Chuck said that these cars could actually drive upside down if they were on an oval track that was banked steeply enough. It takes a pretty fit athlete to handle one of these machines, and racecar drivers are some of the fittest athletes in the world. In some races, according to Chuck, the driver will lose up to 10 pounds, despite drinking fluids throughout the race. No wonder car racing has such rabid fans!

Congratulations to Garrett Tucker, who was graduated from Chico State on May 10 with a BS in Business Administration/Accounting. Garrett’s parents, Cindy and Mark Tucker, and brothers Dustin and Ross, were all there for the ceremony. Garrett hopes to get a job with one of the big accounting firms in Santa Rosa. According to Cindy, you need to make your reservations for Chico’s graduation starting about June 15 of the previous year. They did not, and ended up staying about 30 minutes away from Chico. So if you have a graduate next year, you are forewarned!

And speaking of graduations, remember to send in your graduation information. We will publish the high school graduation information in the next issue of the KP, so send it in soon! Inquiring minds want to know.

Recently, Oakmont residents Patricia Lewis and Rena Cotton visited their friends Sue and Ed Reinsch, former Oakmonters who “retired” (again) to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. Ed is the past president of the Valley of the Moon Rotary Club, and after leaving Oakmont, he and Sue spent 16 months traveling through the United States and Canada in their 5th wheel before settling in Arkansas.

In early May, Kathy and Mario Bongiovanni of Kenwood went to New York City to visit Kathy’s best friend and her favorite cousin. They had a great time, and snapped this photo in a park in Soho.

Thanks to the travelers for remembering to take along the Kenwood Press. Believe it or not, it’s summertime, and time to think about the annual Kenwood Press Summer Photo Contest, Pictures with the Press. The deadline is August 20, so you have plenty of time to think about when and where to capture that winning photo. Just don’t wait too long – August will be here sooner than you think!

That’s all for now. Don’t forget to send us news of your graduations, weddings and other celebrations, or interesting tidbits for Village Chat. It’s easy to do. Just email Kenwoodpress@aol.com, or call 833-5155 and chat me up! – A.Q.
