Counting our blessings

We are delighted that the election is finally over, and that Barack Obama is the President Elect. It was exhilarating to see such a large voter turnout and to see the number of first-time voters who went to the polls. Nov. 4 was a historic day, indeed. So many people got involved in the campaign, including a number of Kenwood and Glen Ellen folks who actually went to Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado to help get out the vote. We can’t remember another U.S. presidential election where people around the world were dancing in the streets. We’ve talked to Republicans who voted for McCain and are still kind of happy with the results. One group of revelers in a San Francisco bar broke into song – The Star Spangled Banner!

So, as we approach Thanksgiving Day and think about our blessings, we are thankful for democracy. And another thing – no more campaign commercials!

We are also thankful for our dogs. They never cared how many days it was until Election Day. They don’t care who the president is. They’re just happy when you get home so they can play ball. When it’s time to eat, they’re happy. When they find something smelly to roll in, they’re happy. When they see another dog, they’re ecstatic. We don’t envy them; we’re just glad to have them in our lives.

We just found out that Tim Lincecum won the National League Cy Young Award. Talk about a silver lining to an otherwise mediocre season! Now there’s something to be thankful for – and only five months until Spring Training.

We’re thankful for the rain. Let’s hope we get a lot more of it. And we’re thankful for the harvest – not the grapes, but the vegetables in our garden. This year, for the first time in recent memory, we had an awesome vegetable garden. We canned tomatoes and applesauce, and have learned the many things you can do with onions, jalapeńos and pumpkins. Our kids would add, “Thank God the Swiss chard is finally gone!”

We live in a beautiful place full of interesting people who really participate in their community. When tragedy strikes, people rally around. When good things happen, they celebrate. When there’s a problem, they come together to solve it. It’s not perfect, but if it were it wouldn’t be so much fun to live here. We’re grateful for our hometown of Kenwood, and for our neighbors, Glen Ellen and Oakmont. And, of course, we always are thankful for our family and friends.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all.
