The Petaluma Arts Center – home of the Petaluma Arts Council – will host the annual Member’s Exhibition through Jan. 4. This exhibition features a diverse array of works by numerous talented Arts Council members. In conjunction with the exhibition, a raffle will be conducted of artful experiences and prizes, including passes to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, a Steven Oliver Ranch tour, Charles M. Schulz Museum tour, an opportunity to exhibit your artwork at the Riverfront Gallery, and gift certificates. The hours are Thurs.-Mon., 12 to 4 p.m. and admission is free. On Dec. 2, at noon, the World Affairs Council of Sonoma County will meet at the Luther Burbank Art and Garden Center, 2050 Yulupa, Santa Rosa, for a social box-lunch picnic. The lunch will be followed by a lecture from former WACSC president, history professor and author Robert Kirk, about “Terror on the High Seas: Piracy Today.” After a brief history of piracy, he will detail the increasing frequency and location of attacks today, explain how pirates operate, what they expect to gain, how the international community is acting to counter piracy, and what can be done to protect passengers and cargo. The Council will have another meeting on Dec. 10, 7:30 p.m., at the Spring Lake Village Auditorium. Santa Rosan Jeffrey Parker will speak on, “Changing China: Lessons from Two Decades in the People’s Republic, and Some Thoughts About its Rise.” Parker has lived in China since 1990, first as a journalist, and since 2003 as a publisher. No cost to World Affairs Council members and Spring Lake Village residents, $5 to non-members.

Richard Thompson will be appearing at McNear’s Mystic Theater in downtown Petaluma on Dec. 2 and 3, with shows starting at 8:30 p.m. A prolific guitarist and songwriter, Thompson has had an incredibly productive and vital career, beginning with the trail-blazing folk-rock group Fairport Convention, to his duo albums with Linda Thompson, as well as his 20-plus years as a critically acclaimed solo artist. His latest offering is Walking on a Wire: 1968-2009. Tickets are $30.

Santa Claus is coming to the Sonoma Community Center, 276 E. Napa St., Sonoma, on Friday, Dec. 4. After a 6 p.m. lighting ceremony at Sonoma City Hall, Santa will arrive at the Community Center to take photos with children. There will be warm cider and cookies, craft projects for children, and a brass music performance by The Bellaphones. Entrance and snacks are free. Photos are charged separately. Volunteers are needed for the 11th annual Paws For Love Gala to be held Feb. 6, 2010. There are a variety of fun jobs available. The City of Santa Rosa Recreation, Parks and Community Services Department is sponsoring its popular community event, the Dickens of a Holiday Crafts Fair, on Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Finley Community Center, 2060 W. College Ave. in Santa Rosa. The fair will feature over 60 booths of “juried” handcrafted items sold by the artists who design and craft them. Shoppers will find a large selection of gifts including jewelry, clothing, ceramics, pottery, stained and fused glass, woodwork, children’s toys, photos, prints and more. The event also features holiday music and refreshments. Tickets ($2) are good for both days. Sunday at the Funnies will be showing at the Charles M. Schulz Museum Dec. 5 through April 19. Throughout the last 100 years readers have eagerly turned to their Sunday funnies to be amused, entertained and even reflective. Audiences can now revisit their weekly Sunday comic rituals at this new exhibit. Guests will view newspaper tear sheets spanning the past century that include such favorites as Little Orphan Annie, Dick Tracy, Pogo, Bloom County, and Calvin and Hobbes, among others. The museum is located at 2301 Hardies Lane, Santa Rosa. Tickets are $5-$8.

The 29th annual Holiday Open House will take place at Luther Burbank Home and Gardens, Santa Rosa and Sonoma Aves. in Santa Rosa, on Dec. 5 and 6, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tour the historic home decorated for the holidays in Victorian style. Festive music will be playing and guests will be served complimentary spiced tea and fresh baked cookies in the famous Greenhouse. A holiday craft activity for children will be set up in the tent, and Santa is planning his usual visit. Victorian dressed carolers will also be stopping by to sing for the visitors. The Sonoma Ecology Center and the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District will be leading an outing on Dec. 6, from 9-11 a.m. Winter is a great time to learn about our area’s birds. You are invited to explore the Montini Open Space Preserve as the group searches for this season’s flying friends. Time will be spent scanning the fields and examining the majestic oaks looking for winter birds and bugs. This is an intermediate-to-advanced level hike. There is no charge for this outing. On Dec. 6, 3 p.m., the Sonoma Music Society is presenting their Holiday Concert featuring the Slavyanka Men’s Russian Chorus. Based in San Francisco, Slavyanka is an a cappella group performing Slavic Liturgical and Secular Choral Music of the season. The concert will take place at Andrews Hall, Sonoma Community Center, 276 E. Napa St., Sonoma. You can help make the holidays bright for a Sonoma Valley child in need this holiday season by simply donating a gift for the 7th Annual High-Powered Toy Drive at Infineon Raceway. All toys collected between now and Dec. 7 will be distributed to more than 250 children at the raceway’s party on Dec. 12. New, unwrapped toys and gifts for children from infant to 16-years-old are needed and can be dropped off in Sonoma, Monday-Friday through Dec. 7, at the following places: Infineon Raceway, WillMar Center, Sonoma Valley Chamber of Commerce, and the Swiss Hotel. The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art will hold a new exhibition, Life in the Making, Dec. 11 through March 14. The exhibition celebrates the work and workings of three internationally acclaimed artists: Jim Melchert, June Schwartz and Kay Sekimachi. Inspired by the very act of making, these three artists embrace the power of artistic practice to enrich life experience. All three artists have each worked for several decades to integrate physical, emotional and spiritual aspects whether working with ceramics, metalsmithing or weaving. David Irvine and the Sonoma Valley Chorale are ready to present another set of enthralling programs for the 2009/2010 Season. As an adult community chorus (18+), the Sonoma Valley Chorale always extends a big welcome to new voices looking for a place to call home. If you are within a Monday night’s commute distance to the town of Sonoma, there is a place for you to come and share your gift. Rehearsals begin promptly at 7 p.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial Building on First St. West, and end at 9:30 unless otherwise noted on the schedule.
