Deep winter

Winter used to be my least favorite time of year – all that cold weather, all those short days and bare trees. But it’s starting to grow on me. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older that somehow the end of the year is a more appealing time. Maybe it’s because I have two children away at college, and winter means they will soon be coming home for a month. Maybe it’s because I have an excuse to make ginger snaps and persimmon muffins, and I no longer worry about what to give anyone for Christmas. Maybe it’s because I have two young dogs begging me to come outside and play even if it’s 37 and drizzling. As we tromp along I notice the mistletoe in the oak canopy, the moss on the tree trunks, the mushrooms hiding in the dead grass. I notice the shiny black of the crows against the steel gray sky, and the red berries of the Toyon. Maybe it’s the warmth of the fire in the fireplace, or the fact that on freezing nights the stars twinkle more brightly than any other time of year.

Maybe I like winter because it’s a reminder of where I’m headed in my own life. I’m not there yet, but more and more, the people I love are, and it’s a gentle reminder to savor not just every season of the year, but also every season of life. Winter is a time for hibernation, for resting up before the next great adventure – spring with its rebirth and renewal. I’ve noticed that when times are darkest, and here I’m speaking metaphorically, that’s when I’ve gained the greatest insights. I need the dark, long hours to rest my brain and my soul. Funny, when I was younger I never felt the need. That’s a gift of middle age.

May we all have a restful winter, and may we all come out of the darkness into a fabulous New Year and a new decade.

A couple of housekeeping notes

We do not publish a January 1st issue, so look for us again on January 15, 2010. Also, we will be moving our office literally around the corner in the Kenwood Shopping Center. As of Dec. 29 we will occupy the space where Vita Bella is now, next to the Post Office, and Vita Bella is moving into our location between the Kenwood Market and Doce Lunas Restaurant.
