Post Card from Glen Ellen

Weather’s here –Wish you were fine!

OK, I give up. What is that winged victory on the back of a black jeep you see around town? It’s an artistic creation by Kermit Frazier from Utah. It is a “winged man” that took Frazier years to create, and represents the freedom and strength of the road. See more at kermitfrazier.com.

Don’t you love the hand-painted signs around town? Sandy Strassberg’s sign commanding “New Kitty. Drive slowly” – note the correct adverb. And the colorful hand-painted sign when you drive out of the Post Office announcing “fresh veggies, chili, and fudge” available down O’Donnell Lane.

Speaking of being in the Post Office, I keep thinking I’m catching George Ellman out of the corner of my eye, picking up his mail.

Do you remember the wonderful tenor in the produce department at the market? In years past he’s sung holy and pop holiday songs among the broccoli and lettuce. Let’s hope dashing Dale Downing and darling Don Shone bring him back to sing among the legumes this year.

Also among my favorite things at the market is kindly Kathy Fisher, the cheerful soul in the “nutrition” or “health food” or “alternative healing” section. You can tell her your most embarrassing medical secret and she will respond with full attention and compassion, then suggest melatonin, zinc, tea tree oil, or beeswax to cure your ills.

Our Town Crier and my warm colleague, the wonderful Sylvia Crawford, would never broadcast her own good news, so I will do it for her. Here’s the news about Sylvia and Bill Crawford’s two boys: You remember Schuyler Orion, the Dunbar kid who went on to surf around the world, then worked for Save the Waves organization, preserving beaches and ocean water? Sky has met the lovely Amy Goldhammer, recently of Seattle, and they will marry in May in the vineyard at Buena Vista Winery. Amy, an executive with North Face Mountain Climbing, and Sky have bought a 19th century barn-turned-into-gorgeous-house in Oakland. Sylvia’s son Gabriel Ayers, fluent in Japanese, worked for several years as a translator in Japan where he met the love of his life, Hilary. Gabe and Hilary married in the beautiful wildflower woods of Framingham last August, and make their home in Cambridge, MA, where he works for MIT, and she for Harvard. Pretty nice credentials. So Sylvia and Bill’s Creekbottom House at the confluence of Sonoma and Calabasas Creeks is empty of the boys for the time being, but a bigger family was gained in the process. Kudos to Bill and Sylvia.

Santa’s sleigh-wagon with his Clydesdale elves will be under the big oak in the parking lot of the Jack London Lodge, Dec. 19, at 2 pm. Be there…yes, with your bells on.

Getting to Know the Locals

So just who IS that lovely and elegant Julie Atwood, the gracious woman who opens her barn doors to neighbors for charity events and parties? Julie Solomon Atwood is a country girl AND a city girl. A native Californian from Los Angeles, she grew up in the Valley town of Clovis, the “California Cowboy Capital of the West.” Julie moved to Sonoma County at 22, working as a buyer for the old I. Magnin on Union Square. But Julie’s true love was as a ranch caretaker and horse trainer in dusty Healdsburg and Valley Ford, when she was not promoting Italian handbags and exotic cosmetics in the shining city to the south.

Julie Solomon Atwood

What youthful adventures Julie has had before her present incarnation as an event planner! There was the gathering of wild horses in Battle Mountain, working summers at a Mono Lake pack station, restoring medieval architecture in England and Scotland, and thus she can, get this, thatch a roof!

Julie was influenced by her beloved grandparents who were furniture designers. She designed the stunning Atwood Barn along Hwy. 12 at the big curve, which is both a working barn and a party barn. She owns and operates Julie Atwood Events, creating sparkling parties for worthy causes. Her events work gives her the greatest pleasure when she can create a marvelous environment that makes people want to support local, under-the-radar charities.

Julie’s wish list? “If I could wave my Fairy Godmother wand, I’d create a single, wonderful K-12 school district in Glen Ellen/Kenwood, like the one I grew up in. I had the most wonderful, enriched public school education in a very rural community, like ours.” Another wish: a fast train to the City!

We drink a toast of gratitude to you, dear Julie Solomon Atwood, for your wonderful work on behalf of others! Cheers!

From Your Faithful Correspondent.

Warmest holiday wishes to Glen Ellen and beyond. May the New Year bring peace and fulfillment to all.
