Vacation rental ordinance workshop Jan. 26

As part of the process for developing an ordinance regulating vacation rentals in unincorporated Sonoma County, a public workshop will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 6-9 p.m., in the hearing room of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, 575 Administration Dr., in Santa Rosa.

At the meeting, the public will be able to give input on a proposed ordinance. There has been a proliferation of single-family homes being turned into vacation rentals in Sonoma County, many in Sonoma Valley. The industry has essentially been unregulated by the county, and the ordinance would develop specific rules and regulations for these rentals, a number of which are in residential areas.

For example, the proposed ordinance would limit the number of guests per bedroom and the number of outside visitors. The ordinance would also establish rules about noise, parking and garbage. The new regulations would require owners of vacation rentals to get a permit that could be revoked if the ordinance is violated three times.

After the workshop, PRMD staff will prepare a draft ordinance, which will then have to be signed off on by the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors.
