February Observatory events

Did you know there is a world-class observatory in your back yard at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park in Kenwood?

The Robert Ferguson Observatory has many events throughout the year, including the following in February:

Public Solar Observing will take place Feb 13, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and Public Night Observing will occur later that night, starting at 7 p.m.

A class in the Night Sky Spring Series is scheduled for Feb 9, 7 p.m. Learn the constellations, stars, deep sky objects, and more. Includes observing. Reservations recommended. Go to www.rfo.org for more information. There is a fee for these classes.

Observing Lab will take place Feb 12, 6:30 p.m. (Rain check date: Wed, Feb. 17), with the topic “Diffuse nebulae, star formation and open clusters.” Observing Labs are special programs offered by RFO that provide a night of intensive telescope observing devoted to a single topic. Each attendee gets to have lots of eye time at the scopes, with an annotated observing list of the targeted objects, guidance from the docents operating the scopes, a brief presentation explaining the night’s topic, and more. (All telescopes are provided by the observatory.) This is the sort of observing experience that few people get to have, made easy and ready and waiting for you! The fee is $30 ($27 for Valley of the Moon Observatory Association Subscribers). To register for an Observing Lab, email: nightsky@rfo.org.

For more information in general about the observatory, go to www.rfo.org.
