Candidate Devore laid out stance for Oakmont Republicans

By Benjamin Taylor

At the Feb. 11 meeting of the Republican Club of Oakmont, many of our 156 members were present to hear from guest speaker, Assemblyman Chuck Devore, who is currently running for the U.S. Senate seat held by Barbara Boxer.

DeVore currently represents the 70th District of California with over 500,000 constituents living in Orange County. He was elected in 2004, reelected in 2006 and in 2008.

Chuck and his wife, Diane, were married in 1988. They have two daughters.

In 1983, DeVore enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve, and was commissioned an officer in 1985. He served as a Reagan White House appointee in the Pentagon from 1986 to 1988. A graduate of the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College, Chuck retired from the Army National Guard after 24 years of service, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Chuck has recently appeared on the Glenn Beck show, and has been written up in George Will’s column. Of the three Republicans who are competing for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Barbara Boxer, DeVore is the most conservative. His stand on some of the major issues is as follows:

Energy: “America needs America’s energy – modern nuclear power and advanced oil and gas drilling.”

Modern Nuclear power: “Energy from nuclear power will allow us to economically and reliably electrify portions of our transportation sector as well as prevent the burning of additional natural gas to make electricity.”

Advanced oil and gas drilling: “America has tremendous reserves of energy, but many environmental policies serve to lock our energy up and prevent our using it, making us dangerously dependant on other nations [some quite unfriendly] for our oil and gas. New drilling techniques are available with minimal impact on the environment.”

Healthcare: “The Federal government-run Medicare system is bankrupt, and the “public option” favored by our President and Barbara Boxer will make the problem worse. There is nothing wrong with the American healthcare system that free markets, and the choice and competition they bring, can’t fix. I support five major reforms, which include allowing interstate competition for insurance coverage, and encouraging tort reform – doctors [are forced] to practice too much defensive medicine to guard against medical malpractice lawsuits.”

Securing Our Borders: “Unlike Senator Boxer, [I have] been a consistent supporter of completing a “border fence” along our southern border. Also, allowing a “mass amnesty” would be unfair to those who are patiently following the rules. Once we get control of our borders, it is important to review our present system for issuing work visas, especially as it relates to California’s critical agricultural sector.”
