Village Chat: 04/01/2010
Village Chat for April 15, 2010

No, Johnny Depp wasn't in town on March 24, but there was an energetic group of Kenwood School students performing Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Led by director extraordinaire Kate Kennedy, the cast put on two shows, skillfully capturing the spirit of Alice (played by nine different students) and her magical journey. Special kudos for the amazing costumes and sets, and bravo to all the boys and girls, and parents and teachers who contributed to this memorable Alice.

On March 11, 12 members of the Oakmont Kiwanis Club visited the Redwood Empire Food Bank, donning gloves and hairnets to repackage more than 1,000 pounds of pinto beans into 3-pound plastic sacks for distribution to families. The result - about 400 bags of beans filled in 90 minutes. The Kiwanians learned a lot about how the food bank operates. The Food Bank provides over 9.1 million meals annually or an estimated 25,000 meals a day. About 70,000 people are served by the Food Bank on a monthly basis, and increasing numbers of seniors, children, and working families are showing up each month at food distribution sites seeking supplemental groceries to help them make it through another month. And the need is increasing. In 2008-09 more than 11 million pounds of food were distributed, including five million pounds of fresh produce, or 48% of the total. The Food Bank is located at 3320 Industrial Drive in Santa Rosa. To volunteer at the Food Bank as an individual or group, call 523-7900. As the Kiwanis Club members found out, their mission and services are impressive.

If you have never heard Ben McLain's a cappella group, SONOS, now's your chance. The group is performing at Maria Carrillo High School on April 10 at 7 p.m. This is the Fine Arts Committee's annual gala fundraiser, and there will be a silent auction and raffle, along with some delicious treats made by the culinary arts students. Tickets are a very affordable $15, which not only is for a good cause, but also gives you a chance to hear an amazing young vocal group that is poised to hit the big time. Order your tickets by mailing a check, made out to FAC, c/o MCHS, 6975 Montecito Blvd, 95409, or by calling to Cindy Titus at 539-2766.

Some other local events are coming up that you won't want to miss. St Patrick's Episcopal Church is hosting a Fashion Show and Luncheon at 12:30 p.m. on April 17 in the Parish Hall. The clothing is from Coldwater Creek in Montgomery Village. The food will be delicious (I can vouch that these Episcopal Church Women really know how to cook), and proceeds go to support Social Advocates for Youth and The Living Room, plus other ECW programs. Tickets are $17. Call 833-4228.

Mark your calendar for an Earth Day Celebration at Wildwood Farm (next to the Kenwood Inn & Spa) on April 18 from 1-5 p.m. More details will be available in the next issue.

On April 22, Open Mic Night returns to the Kenwood Depot. This is a sure sign of warm-weather times ahead, with music wafting outside the old train depot on Warm Springs Rd. while kids run around and the older folks sip, nibble, and listen to some surprisingly talented local musicians. All are welcome. If you plan on performing, sign-ups are at 5:30 p.m. Music starts at 6. Feel free to bring a potluck dish to share. For more information, contact Guy Slater, 508-5917, or joyandguy@comcast.net. Open Mic will be on the third Thursday of the month throughout the spring and summer, so mark your calendar.

On May 1, local gardener Tara Conrow invites you to participate in a seedling and plant exchange in her driveway on Jessie St. in Kenwood Village. This is a great way to add variety to your yard and garden, and it's free! So plan ahead, and start some extra seedlings, divide those bulbs, and get ready to spread the wealth. Questions, call Tara's cell phone, 415-309-0242.

I'd like to wish Happy Birthday to two of my friends, Sarah Phillips and Catherine Moylan. Each of them just had a momentous one!

That's all for now. Don't forget, if you have an item for Village Chat, you can email it to ann@kenwoodpress.com, or call 833-5155 and chat me up! - A.Q.
