Ray Chapin,age 91

Former Kenwood resident Ray Chapin passed away on April 30, 2010, from complications following a broken hip earlier in the month. He was the husband of the late Phyllis Chapin who passed away in 1999. They were married for 54 years. Ray was born in November of 1918 in Corona, California. He was the sixth of nine children born to Susie and Pete Chapin. His family traveled from town to town as Ray’s dad found work in blacksmithing and farming. Ray was drafted into the Army during WWII and served the majority of his time in the South Pacific with the 41st Division. Towards the end of his army stint he met the love of his life and married Phyllis Agnew after a six-week courtship.

When the war ended Ray and Phyllis set up home in Watsonville, California, and in 1946, they had their first son, Sandy. Sometime after that they moved to Oregon where Ray became the town marshal of Gold Hill. Second son Gary was born there in 1949. Shortly after Gary’s birth, Ray and Phyllis moved back to Santa Clara County, California, where they worked and raised their two sons. Ray was a hod carrier most of his working life. He and his family spent many vacations camping and fishing all over California.

Upon retirement in 1981, Ray and Phyllis relocated to Kenwood, so they could be closer to Gary and his family. Ray enjoyed gardening and maintained a beautiful vegetable garden in the summer. Each winter Ray and Phyllis would hit the road in their Winnebago motor home and travel to the Southwest for two to three months. They lived in Kenwood for 18 years before Ray sold their home after Phyllis’s death. He moved into a modular home at Rincon Valley Mobile Estates in Santa Rosa. He lived there for eight years, and then moved to Sonoma for about 1 years before settling in at Vintage Brush Creek Assisted Living, Santa Rosa. He remained there until his death last month.

In addition to Ray’s two married sons, he has one granddaughter in Brooklyn, New York; another granddaughter who is a Lieutenant in the Navy and lives near Washington, DC; and two married grandsons, Brett (Nancy) and Kevin (Erica) who live here in Sonoma County. He also has one great grandson, Ethan, who is 2 years old.
