Ruth Bradford Luzzi 1913-2010

Ruth Bradford Luzzi, age 94, passed away June 13. Born in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, she moved to Fontana, California, at age four where she spent time on her cousin’s ranch. She grew up in Los Angeles where she married John Flachman and had four children.

Always wanting to live in the country, they purchased property on Hoff Rd. in 1950. They had a prune orchard where they picked, dipped, and dried the prunes, raised chickens, rabbits, pigeons, hogs, and a couple of head of beef. Ruth worked at the Sonoma State Hospital (now the SDC) and Napa State Hospital, retiring as a Psychiatric Technician II.

Always interested in trying new things, Ruth began beekeeping, and delighted in eating her homegrown honey. She was an avid gardener, and an even more avid reader. She was very interested in astronomy, and her various trips around the world included a trip to Peru to watch Halley’s Comet.

Ruth was proud of her heritage as a direct descendent of Governor William Bradford of the Mayflower, and she belonged to the Mayflower Society for many decades, and served as State Secretary of the Society.

Ruth is survived by her son John Flachman of Santa Rosa; daughter Annette Shoemaker of Oregon; and daughter Linda Davis of Kenwood; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. She loved Kenwood and Sonoma Valley, saying many times you could find no better place to live.
