Rabinowitsch to speak to Current Events Group
The Oakmont Current Events Group’s speaker for Friday, Sept. 17, will be former Santa Rosa City Council member Steve Rabinowitsh, who will discuss M. James Wilkinson’s book, Who Rules Santa Rosa and Why It Matters.
A “seismic shift” occurred in Santa Rosa politics between 2004 and 2008, putting a progressive majority in power on the City Council for the first time ever. Who Rules Santa Rosa describes the defeat of the long-reigning pro-developer political machine and analyzes the underlying political dynamics. Why it matters is because whoever rules on the City Council will decide the path of Santa Rosa’s growth management, social change, and environmental sustainability.
Steve is an instructor of Political Science at Santa Rosa Junior College. He served on the Santa Rosa City Council and the Executive Board of the Association of Bay Area Governments from 1998-2006. He helped organize community support for the Prince Memorial Greenway and led the restoration of Santa Rosa Creek while on the City Council.
He currently serves on the SMART Citizens Oversight Committee, the Advisory Committee of the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District, the Sonoma County Community Foundation Board of Directors, and is a member of two city council committees: the Santa Rosa Art in Public Places Committee and the Santa Rosa Watershed Advisory Committee. The book Who Rules Santa Rosa and Why it Matters is available at Copperfield Books, Montgomery Village.
The Sept. 17 meeting will take place from 1-2:30 p.m. at the East Recreation Center, 7912 Oakmont Drive, and is open to all Oakmont residents and their guests.
