Tick, tick, tick …

I have just recently started riding my bike again, training for Levi’s Gran Fondo on Oct 4. I signed up for the 32-mile Piccolo route, which is mainly flat, so I have a good chance of actually finishing. After getting myself all kitted up in my fluorescent yellow jacket, dorky helmet and flashing red bike light, I set off, certain that I was visible on the road and, hopefully, safe from danger. And I was, until I was almost home. Turning onto my road, what do I see but a patch of very dark black and very bright white waddling along in the brush by the side of the road – a skunk! I high-tailed it back the other way and waited a safe distance until it went down into the creek. Then I sped off toward home only to be brought to another stand-still by not one but two skunks, right in front of my driveway. Geez, what is it with the skunks this summer? They’re everywhere … at least everywhere I am. It was a good five or ten minutes before both skunks wandered far enough away for me to actually go home. They don’t seem to be in much of a hurry.

And no, I’m not going to use a skunk sighting as an excuse to avoid riding my bike. But I will be looking out for more than just cars from now on.

Speaking of making excuses, and avoiding things, the clock is ticking down to the deadline for our summer photo contest, Pictures with the Press. You have until midnight on August 22 to send in your photo or photos. The only important thing to know is that the Kenwood Press must be somewhere in the picture. We leave it to you to interpret what that means. The easiest way to enter is to email your pictures to ann@kenwoodpress.com, but if you are technologically-challenged, we can scan them for you.

We, of course, are ineligible to enter the contest, which is a good thing since we never remember to take our KP with us when we go anywhere. The rest of you have no excuse. In this age of smart phones and Instagram, everyone should have at least one Kenwood Press shot in their life. And it doesn’t even have to be from some exotic locale. Sonoma County, being a tourist destination itself, has plenty to offer, as does your own backyard, metaphorically speaking. Get to work! You could win actual money, and who doesn’t like that? First place is worth $75. Second place is $50, and third is the priceless hearty handshake from your trusty editors. – AQP
