Steve and Colleen Rose could not have picked a better game for their annual Vineyards Inn bus trip to AT&T Park for a Giants game on Sept. 9. The 48 or so Kenwood-based fans enjoyed shirt-sleeve weather and a full harvest moon from their seats in the right field club level. The Rose’s son Jake and his girlfriend Brooke, who live in SF, joined them, and the stadium’s camera crew came by and filmed the whole gang. Steve said that John Poshepny, AKA Johnny Po, was up there on the big screen, larger than life. And best of all, the Giants beat Arizona. Pitcher Yusmeiro Petit threw 26 first-pitch strikes and only needed 84 pitches to win the game. Let’s hope the Giants keep winning, as they are currently leading the wild card race.

And speaking of the Giants, John Podboy’s granddaughter Ava Podboy is a 6th grader and a member of the San Domenico School Chorus, which sang the National Anthem before the Giants v. Brewers game on Aug. 29. The nice thing about children singing the National Anthem is that they do it straight, unlike almost every other National Anthem singer who tries to “make it their own,” which generally means they end up mangling it. The San Domenico kids sounded great, and that was the game the Giants won 13-2!

Heidi Klyn sent us this picture of four bucks in the meadow behind her house in Oakmont. She writes, “I could not believe my eyes. There they were resting in a row … I have a lot of wildlife behind me, for we do not have fenced yards up here, often see fox, a coyote, mountain lion (I missed it; someone else saw it), skunks, raccoons, snakes, red tailed hawks, turkeys, vultures, quail, many species of birds. Life can’t get better than that.” Amen.

There are so many stories from last weekend’s Sonoma Harvest Wine Auction, but the big news is how much money it raised – estimates are $5 million! (See story page 7 for details.) One of the big draws each year is the Magnum Force lot, 60 to 70 magnums of Sonoma County wines, presented by a bevy of dancing, winery-related women. This year’s lot also included a luncheon with 10 lady vintners. Magnum Force was created by Jonnie McCormick (former executive director of the Sonoma Valley Vintners and Growers) 12 years ago, and Suzy Fridell has been choreographing the dance extravaganza for about the same amount of time. Since this year’s theme was “Sonoma to Serengeti,” she used Shakira’s “Waka Waka…Out of Africa,” composed for the World Cup in South Africa. You can imagine how hard it is to get 25 busy women together to rehearse, people like Eva Bertran (Gloria Ferrer), Honore Comfort (Sonoma County Vintners), Maureen Cottingham (Sonoma Valley Vintners and Growers Alliance), and Karissa Kruse (Sonoma County Winegrape Commission), and in fact Suzy never had everyone on stage together until the actual performance on Labor Day. She said, “I have practiced with my ladies in kitchens, driveways, tasting rooms, and living rooms, and wineries between tanks!” And it was time well-spent. The lot went for $45,000, purchased by Rick and Lori Miron, the third time the Miron’s have won the Magnum Force lot. That’s a lot of magnums!

That’s all the news I have room for at the moment. I love to hear from you, so if you have an item for Village Chat, email it to, or call 833-5155 and chat me up! – AQP
