Philbin wedding
Newlyweds Laura and Patrick Philbin.

A highlight of 2015 for Bonney and Ewing Philbin was the wedding of their youngest son Patrick to sweetheart Laura Gosewisch of Victoria, Minnesota. Patrick and Laura met while studying at the University of Granada, Spain in 2008. On Sept. 5, 2015, the couple were married at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Sonoma, and celebrated with a vibrant reception in the garden of the Philbin's Adobe Canyon home. Patrick and Laura honeymooned in Tuscany and Corsica before returning home to San Francisco, where Patrick works for Wandera and Laura works for AnaPlan. Congratulations, Philbins old and new!

In November and December of last year, Kenwood School 6th graders had an “Art Encounter” with local artist Fred Parker. Parker is a well-known painter who works in a variety of media including oil, pastel, acrylic, and computer and photographic processes. Fred provided the students with a selection of about a dozen images, and about an hour of tutorial instruction for using the computer and Photoshop to make art. Each student also had a selection of photographs of their own, taken with iPads supplied by the Kenwood School. Fred returned for a second session to allow the students to continue working on their images and to collect the results, which he then took home to make a final high quality print for each student. As you can see, they turned out great. Thanks, Fred!

Sander in France
Patti White and John Sander in Saint Emilion in the Loire Valley.

In December, John Sander and Patti White of Glen Ellen spent a week in France's Loire Valley and Bordeaux region. John and Patti loved the beautiful valley, and enjoyed exploring the history, chateaus, charming villages and old world wine culture. John said, “Bordeaux and Nantes were both fantastic cities with rich, diverse and unexpected culture and vibe.”

Goeller in Amazon
Jan and Roger Goeller at the Manaus Opera House in the Amazon.

Jan and Roger Goeller took a moment to read their Kenwood Press while visiting the famed Manaus Opera House in the heart of the Amazon. Roger reports that the theater was built around 1882, at the height of the rubber boom, when Brazil's monopoly on rubber made Manaus one of the richest cities on earth. Surrounded by jungle, Manaus is the only major city in a 600-mile radius, and is only accessible by water or air. In 1910 rubber seeds were smuggled to Malaysia by Englishman, Henry Wickham, destroying Brazil's monopoly. The opera house sat wasting in the tropical heat until restoration was complete in 1990. Today Manaus has regained importance because of renewed interest in the Amazon Basin and its preservation with accompanying eco-tourism, and the discovery of oil nearby.
