Deerfield's Checkerbloom Gala a big success

On July 23, Deerfield Ranch Winery hosted the 16th Annual Checkerbloom Gala, benefitting the restoration and maintenance of the Kenwood Wetlands, home of the endangered Marsh Checkerbloom plant.

The Checkerbloom exists in only two places in the United States: Kenwood and Knights Valley in Sonoma County. The marsh restoration project began in 2002, when Deerfield bought the property to expand their winery. There were only a handful of Checkerblooms on the property at the time, due to 30 years of cattle grazing and the proliferation of non-native Himalayan Blackberries.

The Kenwood Marsh Checkerbloom Society, a nonprofit organization, was established by Deerfield co-owner PJ Rex to preserve and maintain the Kenwood Marsh, and protect the endangered flower. Deerfield granted a 14-acre permanent easement to the County of Sonoma to ensure protection of this rare habitat.

“Many people have helped with our wetland restoration project. Thanks to their efforts, this unique ecosystem will be maintained for future generations,” said Rex.

The gala included an online auction, a silent auction, and a live auction. The silent auction continues in the tasting room through the end of August. Stop by Deerfield Ranch Winery at 10200 Sonoma Hwy. in Kenwood. For more information go to www.deerfieldranch.com.

Kenwood resident pens fitness book

Former champion bodybuilder and Kenwood resident Catt Tripoli has recently released a new book, CONSCIOUS FITNESS: Strength Training for the Evolution of Mind, Body and Spirit.

“With this book, I hope to change your concept of fitness,” said Tripoli. “Fitness is not just about the body, and it's not just about the exercises we do. It's about how we work out, whether we do so consciously or by rote. In many respects, the real gym is within.” Tripoli said that Conscious Fitness is a guidebook for mastering that inner territory and applying that wisdom to maximize your workout - and evolve in body, mind and spirit.

Tripoli is a former world champion bodybuilder who has been involved in the health and fitness field for over 35 years. Competing under the name Cathey Palyo, she earned multiple titles, and has been the creative force behind four gyms, including Powerhouse Gym in Santa Rosa, which she currently owns and operates. In addition to training clients in her Conscious Fitness techniques, she is a certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. Catt lives with her two Siamese cats and two exuberant Bull Terriers.
