star with word hope written on it

Rebecca Bailey went over to her burned out property in the Trinity Oaks neighborhood last week and was greeted by stars hanging from the trees and fence posts. Some elves had created beautiful, colorful stars with “Hope,” “Love” and “Strength” written on them, and decorated the property with those words of comfort. On the back of each one was only a child’s name and age. Rebecca said, “We have absolutely no idea who put them up… It cheered our hearts and made Charles and my children smile. We would love to thank the children personally, but have no idea how or where.”

phoenix tattoo on man's arm

Eric Norrbom is displaying his indomitable spirit, literally on his sleeve. His house was one of the first to burn down on Treehaven, but Eric plans to rebuild and rise again, and to prove it, he got a new tattoo… a phoenix.

plates and spoons

We still have leftovers from the Nov. 12 community gathering in Plaza Park, and I don’t mean food. Many of you left your serving platters and utensils behind, and they’re here at the KP. If any of these items are yours, please stop by and pick them up, because eventually we’ll clean up our messy office, and when that happens these things will definitely go!

santa leading clydesdales

Caroling with the Clydesdales is a Glen Ellen Holiday tradition, and this season was no exception. Dec. 16 was a gorgeous winter day when Neil Shepard’s gentle giants pulled a wagon through town, accompanied by Santa Claus, who bore a fleeting resemblance to Dan Heddy. Thanks, guys!

The newest P.E.O., Chapter JO scholarship winner is Amy Bradbury of Santa Rosa. Amy is entering the nursing program at SRJC this month, and she was awarded a $2,500 grant from the Program for Continuing Education which is a part of P.E.O. International. This is a grant program for women who are re-entering the educational world after having been out of school for at least 24 months and who need new skills to qualify them for a better career.

Trina and Norm Oliver were traveling in Italy in October, and they recently sent us a picture, at the Maxxi Museum in Rome. Trina said, “This was one of the highlights of our trip, as a memorial retrospective of the life and work of the architect of the building, Zaha Hadid, was the featured exhibition.”

We got a cute picture from Beth Brannock and Rose Cardinale down in Los Cabos, on Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. I asked Rose if the trip was to celebrate her Nov. 27 birthday (which was a significant one), but she said, “No, just a trip where we remembered to bring the Press for a picture.” Gee, thanks!

Oakmonters Chris and Dennis Finn traveled to Quito, Ecuador, to spend the holidays with their daughter and her lovely family. Chris said they got to live like locals with a good balance of tourist activities thoughtfully arranged by their daughter and her family. They are pictured here at the central plaza in Chordeleg, outside of Cuenca, taking in the traditional handicrafts, ancient architecture and amazing clouds and mountains. Chris said, “I wish I had a photographic memory, everything was filled with beauty.”

That’s all for now. Thank you to everyone who sent in news and photos. It’s easy to do – just email ann@kenwoodpress.com, or call 833-5155 and chat me up! – AQP
