Heyman exits Oakmont board

Ken Heyman resigned from the Oakmont Board of Directors on Jan. 26, saying that while he “expected challenging times, the circumstances after the election were unprecedented.”

Heyman’s departure means that five of the seven seats on the Oakmont board will be up for election in April.

Heyman offered no other reason for resigning. He is the fourth director to leave since last April’s election, which was marked by a contentious recount. Three treasurers also have resigned, one of them twice, and the OVA Manager Cassie Turner also left, citing an inability to work with the new board.

In a statement published on the Oakmont website, Heyman listed recent achievements by the board including the hiring of a new manager, major steps towards resolving a dispute over a location for pickleball through conversion of half the tennis courts at the East Rec Center, and moving forward with a seismic retrofit of the Berger Center.

The board had canceled a pickleball construction project behind the Berger in April, the same day new members were sworn into office. The decision to move ahead with seismic retrofitting followed the resignations of two Berger Committee members, including the chair.

“This is not a decision I make lightly,” Heyman said in his statement. “I look back with pride at my time serving Oakmont and owe so much to the generous support of so many. My hope is that our future focuses on positivity, truth, and goodwill.”
