Update due on Berger Center plans

Oakmont’s governing board has scheduled an update on plans for the Berger Center at a Feb. 6 meeting.

Art Fichtenberg, a member of the Berger Action Committee (BAC), is to report on the status of the long-discussed effort to modernize Oakmont’s largest activity venue.

The first step is a seismic upgrade. At its Jan. 16 meeting, the board assigned Kevin Hubred, Oakmont’s new general manager, to get started on getting city permits.

“I want to bump it up on our list of priorities,” said director Ken Heyman, who moved to put the work in Hubred’s hands. His motion passed 6-2.

Two members of the BAC, Chair Claudette Brero-Gow and member Robert Jackson, resigned from the committee.

The seismic upgrade, adding steel plates to strengthen buttresses at the building’s corners, is a first part of an effort to determine the future of Berger. The BAC is the third committee to study possibilities, which have ranged from remodeling to replacement.

Treasurer resigns

Oakmont lost its third treasurer since last April with Rob Lenahan’s resignation. Board President Gloria Young announced at the board meeting that Lenahan had quit in December.

The board appointed one of its own members, Carolyn Bettencourt, to serve as treasurer through March. Young noted that Bettencourt has 30 years experience from managing her own business and has never been audited.
