Fatal accident on Sonoma Hwy.

Around 5:30 p.m. on May 2, a head-on crash just west of Kenwood on Sonoma Hwy. resulted in a fatality.

Ignacio Valencia , 38, of Sonoma, was driving his 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe on eastbound Sonoma Hwy. near Frey Road. Troy Ersan, 25, of Santa Rosa, was driving his 2015 Subaru Impreza westbound.

The Tahoe crossed into the opposing lane and struck the Impreza head-on. The Tahoe essentially drove over the top of the Impreza and flipped/rolled off the roadway. Ersan was killed upon impact and Valencia was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with minor to moderate injuries. The highway was reduced to one-way traffic control during the investigation and cleanup until 9:40 p.m.

Valencia was arrested on suspicion of felony gross vehicular manslaughter while under the influence, booked into jail and then released.

According to the district attorney’s office at press time, further investigation is going on, and they are awaiting toxicology reports. No official charges have been filed.

Valencia is due back in court on May 25.
