Docent training offered at Quarryhill

Quarryhill Botanical Garden

Wednesday August 14th 2013 - 9:00am to

Quarryhill Botanical Garden in Glen Ellen is offering docent training classes beginning Aug. 7, and continuing Aug 14, 21, and 28. Classes are from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The classes train volunteer teachers to lead educational tours for fourth- and fifth-graders from Sonoma, Napa and Marin counties.

Docents will be trained to lead tours of the Asian woodland garden for small groups of school children, providing students the experience of becoming plant hunters in the wild, collecting seeds, leaves, fruits, and flowers for examination. In the process, various elements of the California state science curriculum are covered, and topics unique to Quarryhill are illustrated. These topics include Asian plants, basic botany, ecology and conservation issues, Asian plant extinction threats, and elements of Asian culture.

After training, docents are required first to shadow and then to lead hikes with students and their chaperones. The two-hour hikes are held during the school year. To sign up for the training, contact Corey Barnes at cbarnes@quarryhillbg.org, or call 996-6027.
