Acorns from “Jack’s Oak” to be planted at Quarryhill

Quarryhill Botanical Garden

Sunday October 6th 2013 - 12:00pm to

As the historic tree known as “Jack’s Oak” nears the end of its life cycle, Jack London State Historic Park and Quarryhill Botanical Garden have come together to celebrate and honor the life of this ancient tree. On Sunday, Oct. 6, at a public celebration honoring the tree, local children will gather acorns and ceremoniously bring them from Jack London State Park to Quarryhill Botanical Garden where they will be planted. Next spring, seedlings from these acorns will be presented during the annual Arbor Day celebration in Sonoma Plaza.

The tree, the past, present and future – as symbolized in the acorns – will be the focus of the celebration, with local artists paying tribute. Poets will honor Jack London’s legacy and his beloved Oak, from which he drew inspiration and under whose limbs he sat to write many of his stories. Dancers will celebrate the life of the tree followed by a blessing from an elder of the Coast Miwok Tribe. Festivities will conclude at Quarryhill with musical performances, activities for the children and picnics.

This is a free event (although there is a $10 parking fee, collected at the entrance kiosk at Jack London State Historic Park). The celebration runs from 10 a.m. to noon at the park, and noon to 2 p.m. at Quarryhill
