Oakmont Sunday Symposium

Oakmont East Recreation Center

Sunday May 2015 - 10:30am to

The Oakmont Sunday Symposium provides a forum for speakers on diverse topics such as science, history, politics, culture and current events. Attendance is intended for Oakmont residents and their invited guests. Symposiums take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the East Recreation Center, 7902 Oakmont Dr.

May 3 – Breck Parkman: “Mammoth Trails, War Games, and Hippie Communes: The Natural and Cultural History of the Valley of the Moon”

The presentation will follow a chronological path from the late Ice Age – when Sonoma Highway was an ancient mammoth road – through the present, featuring a series of stories going from the earliest known human presence to the hippies and beyond.

Breck Parkman is a senior archaeologist with California State Parks, a Research Associate at U.C. Berkeley, and a past president of the Society for California Archaeology. He has appeared in over 200 newspaper, radio, and TV interviews in addition to being featured in a considerable number of documentaries and films. In 2013, Breck played himself in the BBC’s 3-part mini-series, Ice Age Giants, and he will be playing himself again in Martin Scorsese’s new film about the Grateful Dead, which is set for release later this year.
