The Oakmont Sunday Symposium provides a forum for speakers on diverse topics such as science, history, politics, culture and current events. Attendance is intended for Oakmont residents and their invited guests. Symposiums take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the East Recreation Center, 7902 Oakmont Dr.

Upcoming speakers

Nov. 8 - Joan Price: “The Five Biggest Myths about Sex and Aging”

“Senior sexpert” Joan Price returns to the Sunday Symposium to discuss “the challenges, the pleasures, and all the questions we didn't think we could ask out loud,” that led the media to dub her “senior sexpert.” In this presentation, she hopes to shatter some myths as she shares the most common questions that Boomers, seniors, and elders ask her.

Price, is the author of Naked at Our Age: Talking Out Loud about Senior Sex, and Better Than I Ever Expected: Straight Talk about Sex After Sixty. She is the editor of Ageless Erotica.

Nov. 15 - George McKinney: “Stephen Smith and the Bodega Rancho”

Captain Stephen Smith is recognized as one of the most important people in the development of Sonoma County. In this presentation, Oakmont's George McKinney will cover Smith's early career as a sea captain, the grant to him of Rancho Bodega (modern Bodega Bay) in 1843, and what happened to him after the discovery of gold changed California.

McKinney has been an Oakmont resident since 2002. He has been involved in a wide range of activities in Oakmont, and has lectured to the Sunday Symposium in the past. He has been interested in history and genealogy research for most of his life, and recently earned a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University.
