New docent training at observatory


Robert Ferguson Observatory

The Robert Ferguson Observatory (RFO) holds two formal training sessions for new volunteers each year.

New docents are trained in all aspects of running the observatory, from maintaining the building and equipment, to interacting with the public, to running the observatory’s three large telescopes: an elegant 8-inch refractor, a CCD system for astrophotography and research, and our newest beast, a 40-inch reflecting telescope, the largest one in California available for public viewing. The next new docent training session begins Wednesday, April 6, at 7 p.m. in the observatory, located in Sugarloaf Ridge State Park.

RFO welcomes new adult volunteers, preteens and teenagers (if under 18, a parent or guardian is required to undergo docent training as well).
