Public meeting on Lawson Addition

Kenwood Fire Station

Thursday May 19th 2016 - 5:30pm to

On May 19, the second of two public workshops about a recently acquired expansion to Hood Mountain Regional Park, known as the Lawson addition, will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Kenwood Firehouse. Sonoma County Regional Park planners will present a draft Master Plan for the new addition and take public comment and questions.

Made up of 247 acres on the rugged west face of Hood Mountain, the Lawson addition was purchased by the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District from the Lawson family in 2005. It was transferred to Sonoma County Regional Parks in 2014.

The property provides an opportunity for new multi-use trails and greater connectivity to existing trails within the park. Other recreational opportunities might include picnicking, fishing, and nature observation. An old homestead could possibly be turned into a ranger station or hike-in stays by permit-only. The property provides abundant opportunities to learn about natural and cultural history.

The property includes oak woodlands, grasslands, mixed evergreen forest, and riparian chaparral/cypress woodland. A prominent ridgeline offers views of Sonoma Valley and beyond. The property includes several special-status plants and significant cultural resources.

The final Master Plan is expected to be completed by this winter and will go before the Board of Supervisors in February 2017. Regional Parks hopes to have new trails on the Lawson addition open to the public by summer 2017.
