History hike: Ranchers & Hippies

Sugarloaf State Park

Saturday September 16th 2017 - 10:00am to

Sept. 16, 10 a.m.

Normally ranchers and hippies don’t hang out much, but Sugarloaf History Docent Larry Maniscalco will put the two together when he leads a short hike and exploration of the park’s rich cultural history. Learn about the gentleman ranchers of the Mayacamas Ridge and how Sugarloaf nearly became a lake. Walk the site of a Depression-era Boy Scout camp and follow the antics of hippie squatters and New Age meditators. The 2.2-mile hike will follow the Meadow and Hillside trails with 250 feet of elevation gain. Cost is $10 per adult, $5 for campers and students. Meet at the White Barn/stable area near the observatory.

Sugarloaf Ridge State Park is located at 2605 Adobe Canyon Rd., Kenwood. Visit www.sugarloafpark.org for more information. For all events, visit www.brownpapertickets.com and search “Sugarloaf” for tickets. There is an $8 parking fee when you enter the park.
