All-night sitting and week meditation at Zen Center

Sonoma Mountain Zen Center

Monday December 4th 2017 - 7:30pm to

Sesshin, literally “to touch the mind,” is a period of time set aside for an intensive meditation retreat to let go of the conditioned self in order to resume the original nature. The Sonoma Mountain Zen Center will host a Rohatsu sesshin in commemoration of Buddha's enlightenment Dec. 4-9. The retreat begins at 7:30 p.m. on Monday and ends at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Each day, the schedule will begin at 5 a.m. and include 10 periods of meditation, chanting, mindful work, Dharma talks and private interviews, ending at 9 p.m. In the spirit of Buddha's enlightenment, participants will be in tetsuya on Friday night, which means they will “sit through the whole night,” from 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. Special arrangements can be made for those unable to come for the entire retreat due to work commitments.

For those who cannot make Rohatsu during the week, you can join the “all night sitting” on Friday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. Afterwards, at 6 a.m., walk in procession down to Suzuki-roshi's stupa for the founder's ceremony and close Rohatsu with breakfast at the Sangha House.

Cost is $65 per day for nonmembers, $55 per day for members and $45 per day for practicing members. The Sonoma Mountain Zen Center is located at 6367 Sonoma Mountain Road. Find out more at 545-8105 or www.smzc.org.
