Docent training for education program at Quarryhill

Quarryhill Botanical Garden

Wednesday July 25th 2018 - to

Quarryhill Botanical Garden is putting out a call for volunteers to train as docents for its 2018-19 fourth- and fifth-grade education program. Docent training runs on Wednesdays, July 25-Aug. 29.

The school tours at Quarryhill offer Sonoma County youth an immersive garden tour that increases their understanding of and appreciation for the natural world. Itís a chance for elementary students to experience a beautiful garden and supplement their classroom botanical education with outdoor experience, teaching them about adaptation, conservation, plant anatomy and biology, and the importance of plants in our lives. Students will collect seeds, leaves, fruits and flowers for examination.

Quarryhill is on track to host 1,400 students this coming academic year in its science education program, but in order to accommodate this growing demand, they need more youth education docents.

Volunteers are not required to have a botanical or horticultural background to be a youth education docent. They just need to have a passion for teaching children. Training will be held on six consecutive Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. to noon, and will end with docent shadowing during the first month of tours in September (on Tuesdays and Thursdays).

To sign up for Quarryhill education docent training, contact Neely Hart at 996-6027 or nhart@quarryhillbg.org. For more information, go to quarryhillbg.org/page93.html. Quarryhill is located at 12841 Sonoma Hwy., Glen Ellen.
