Introduction to Backpacking

Sugarloaf State Park

Saturday March 16th 2019 - 10:00am to

10 a.m.- 1p.m.

Join Kenwoodian and backpacker Inga Aksamit for a three-hour course covering basics and examining gear. She will bring examples of all the gear needed. No actual hiking is involved in this instructional session. The goal is to introduce participants to modern, lightweight backpacking strategies. Topics include equipment, trip planning, navigation, food, water treatment, and common problems in the backcountry and how to avoid them. You don’t need a heavy pack to enjoy a wilderness experience. If you’ve never backpacked, or it’s been decades, this is for you. There will be tips for all – from backpacking with children to considerations for seniors. Aksamit is an experienced guide in the Sierra and beyond. Meet at the Robert Ferguson Observatory classroom. Register at sugarloafpark.org/events. Cost is $10. Aksamit will also host an overnight session at Hood Mountain Regional Park in May, sponsored by the Sierra Club.
