Current Events -- The Living Room

Oakmont West Recreation Center

Friday December 2008 - 1:00pm to

The next Current Events Forum, 1 p.m. on Dec. 5, will hear from Arlene Irizary, Program Coordinator for The Living Room. Dick Latimer will chair the meeting. The Living Room is a day-time center for homeless women and children, providing them a place to go and a meal during the day. Last year The Living Room served more than 800 women and children. Their clients range in age from infant to 80 years old. Nowadays they are seeing an increase in the numbers of families with children, and in the numbers of “older” women aged 50 and above. Irizary has been working in social services for more than 30 years, with West County Community Services, helping establish a senior center in Guerneville and then helping provide flood relief for seniors and people with disabilities; as Director of Deluge Response Interfaith; as Housing Services Coordinator/Independent Living Advocate for Community Resources for Independence; as Case Management Coordinator for Catholic Charities in Sonoma County; and now, as Program Coordinator for the Living Room. Come hear about the Santa Rosa community’s response to the plight of homeless women and children.

On December 12, bring to the open forum your topics for discussion. Angela Bonin will chair. The world economic situation and a new administration are giving us plenty to talk about. Come and put in your two cents’ worth.

The Current Events Forum meets on Fridays at 1 p.m. in Oakmont’s West Recreation Center. For further information contact Hy Liebling, 539-4034 (hyjune@sonic.net). Open to Oakmont residents and their guests.
