Creative Writing/Calabazas Creek

Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve

Saturday March 27th 2010 - 9:00am to 1:30pm

The Sonoma Ecology Center and the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District will be leading a Creative Writing exploration of the Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve on Saturday, March 27, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

This outing will be led by Ecology Center naturalists and authors Becca Lawton and Arthur Dawson.

Becca Lawton’s passion is exploring and writing about the natural world. Her work has been published in Orion, Sierra, The San Francisco Chronicle Magazine, Shenandoah, More, and other magazines. Her memoir on rivers and the whitewater guiding culture, Reading Water: Lessons from the River, was a San Francisco Chronicle Bestseller and ForeWord Nature Book of the Year finalist. Arthur Dawson is an award-winning poet, author, and teacher of creative writing, as well as the founder of Kulupi Press. His books include two local bestsellers: The Stories Behind Sonoma Valley Place Names and On Foot in Sonoma, co-authored with Becca Lawton. His most recent poetry collections are Saying this Place Right: Poems of Landscape and Language, and Western Scenes from Chinese Characters.

The Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve, which encompasses 1,290 acres and overlooks the Valley of the Moon, will eventually be turned over to the State as an addition to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. It is one of the most exquisite natural sites in Sonoma Valley, containing a variety of habitats and breath-taking vistas.

This is an intermediate to advanced level outing. There is no charge for this outing. Reservations are required by Friday, March 26. For more information, contact Elly Seelye at 996-0712, ext. 124, or email her at elly@sonomaecologycenter.org.
