GE Historical Society discussion

Glen Ellen Community Church

Saturday October 23rd 2010 - 0 to

A panel discussion about the Californio days in the Valley of the Moon will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m. in the Glen Ellen Community Church’s Mayflower Hall. The topic is that brief 23-year period from 1823 to 1846, when Alta California was under the rule of a newly independent Mexico, and Sonoma Valley was just awakening.

Three speakers will explore the social and political aspects of the time, including the de-secularization of the once powerful missions, and the gradual transformation of the great cattle ranches into the homesteaded farms of pioneer Americans.

Speakers include Dan Markwyn, history professor emeritus from Sonoma State University, Juan Pedro Gaffney Rivera, director of Coro Hispano de San Francisco, and Jim Danaher, manager of the Sonoma State Historic Park.

Admission is free, though donations and membership in the Glen Ellen Historical Society Glen Ellen Historical Society are encouraged.
