Rotary hears about transplants
Recently the Valley of the Moon Rotary Club was treated to a talk from Dr. Peter Breton about a worthy charity called LifePlant. This is a continuing project initiated and supported by the Novato Rotary club with help from Rotary Clubs in Northern California and in the Philippines. The program’s objective is to provide kidney transplants to needy patients from willing donors, usually family members. Medical and accompanying support personnel are recruited to volunteer for a week’s tour in the Philippines. LifePlant includes a strong educational component, as doctors in developing countries are provided firsthand training in laparoscopic surgery and kidney transplantation.
In addition to performing surgeries, Dr. Breton lectures about the program to Rotary clubs and community organizations, informing them about organ donation and laparoscopic kidney surgery (currently not being performed in most developing countries). In addition, clothing and book donations are transported and distributed to orphans and needy children. Also, up-to-date medical equipment and supplies are acquired and contributed to medical facilities. The program is not limited to kidney surgery; often other medical disciplines are required to perform their particular skills. For example, soon Santa Rosa’s Dr. Dan Lightfoot will be going on a tour to do cataract surgeries.

Member Snapshot
Pat Randall joined the Valley of the Moon Rotary club in late 2004 and quickly became the club Secretary, a position she has held since. An Army brat, Pat lived in many foreign places before attending Case Western Reserve University. After graduation, she was a social worker and started two daycare facilities in the Washington, DC area. Pat moved to California and became a realtor on the peninsula. On retiring she moved to a beautiful home in Wild Oak. Pat has three children and four grandchildren, with another on the way. In addition to being active in many Rotary projects, Pat is a docent at the Bouverie Preserve. She likes to hike and travel and is an avid movie buff. Pat will be pleased to talk about Rotary, so call her at 537-2288.
The crabs are skittering around the ocean floor, locating in advance their favorite traps in anticipation of their sacrifice for the club’s annual crab feed on February 21. Don’t disappoint them; hold that date.
